About Texas Hills Vineyard
Gary and Kathy Gilstrap, both pharmacists’, after spending years traveling for their Pharmacy Software company were looking for a location for a winery and vineyard. Driving from Austin to Fredericksburg, using the back roads, they happened upon the property now known as Texas Hills Vineyard. After touring the property compared the soil analysis with their friend’s vineyard in Tuscany and found it to be virtually the same. That did it, they bought the property and planted the first vines (10 acres) in 1995, then expanded the vineyard each year to the current 27 acres. Gary likes to say that all us old guys are more complex with more body and the same is true of wines from older grapes (more complex with more body). We did not plant all Italian varieties, but did plant Sangiovese and Pinot Grigio. We are best known for our Kick Butt Cab (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) and more recently for our TORO de TEJAS (Tempranillo), both are GOLD Medal winners against those California wineries.
What Makes Texas Hills Vineyard Unique
Texas Hills is one of the older wineries in the Hill Country. We were the first to grow Pinot Grigio in Texas. We have a large portfolio of wines and we are 100% Texas grapes since opening in 1997. We have a nice gift shop and our cheese and sausage selections are 100% Texas also. The patio overlooks 27 acres of grapevines.
