About Dry Comal Creek Winery and Vineyards
Our founder,Franklin Houser, a former San Antonio attorney, purchased the house and 103 acres in the 1970’s as a get-away for him and his family. He found enjoyment in learning about grapes in particular, Black Spanish grapes. Mr. Houser decided to retire from wine in 2017. Ralph Romero Jr. met Mr. Houser, and voiced his interest in the Vineyard. Over a glass of sangria, the sale was done. Ralphael Romero Sr. is a first generation Mexican immigrant. He spent his summers on a family farm learning English and learning about fruit farming. His grandfather insisted that he immigrate and live the American dream. He founded the vineyards Mother company in 1981, R&D Equipment Co. named after “Ralph” and his lovely bride, Dora.
Ralph Sr. is a proud Texan and has insisted on bringing that character to our wines. In August of 2018, with our new wine maker Penny Adams, Dry Comal Creek uses 100% Texas fruit.
