Planting and Planning

Wine is born of the interaction between four important components:
1. Soil – the substrate they are planted in
2. Plants – grape vines belonging to the genre Vitis, usually Vitis vinifera
3. Environment – all the surrounding living and inert elements
4. People – both the viticulturist and the winemaker, who sometimes can be the same person.
The first three components dictate the qualitative and quantitative potential of any vineyard site with
the help of the last. Having a thorough understanding of these components before planting a vineyard
will make it a whole lot easier to produce high quality wines at the right quantity. Planning plays a very
important role.
