Longhorn Cellars is a boutique winery featuring wines produced and vinted in The Texas Hill Country. Their estate winery aims to showcase a sense of place from each of their estate vineyards, located in Fredericksburg, Hye, and Pontotoc. What led you to become a winemaker?
Short answer: One trip to Napa!
What has surprised you about being a winemaker?
Every vintage is so different.
What are some of the biggest challenges you face as a winemaker, and how have you overcome them?
Working with a limited budget. You work with what you got.
What goals in winemaking are you still working to achieve?
Continuous improvement in quality wine.
What is one of your favorite varietals to work with and why?
Tannat, it is a happy vine in Texas and produces very high-quality fruit.
Which wine, that you’ve made, is your favorite?
Who do you most admire in the world of Texas wine, and why?
Dr. Bob Young of Bending Branch, he is a patient mentor and friend.
What do you hope for the future of Texas Wine?
That growers and winemakers continue to work together to showcase the best of what Texas wines have to offer.
Any tips for future generations of winemakers?
Stubborn determination to succeed is required for anything worth doing.
Longhorn Cellars’ tasting room is open, so plan your trip! Plan ahead as reservations are required on Saturdays. Order wines by the glass or bottle and take in the spacious patio or lounge in the ranch inspired tasting room.
